Description and Acquisition of Skill

Writing and analyzing Research Proposal with ENG210 Professional Writing Communication Literacy 2

To talk about this module, we have to start at the beginning.

Consider this module to be a more advanced version of ENG105-Writing and Rhetoric. I took ENG105 in my first year, which taught me how to write an academic paper effectively and concisely. I learned how to conduct proper research, make proper citations, properly structure paragraphs, and the required report writing types. With ENG105, I was able to write effectively with a clear focus and target audience. The research paper that I did for ENG105 on the food crisis has also impacted me deeply in that I have practiced only buying what I can finish, not to over purchase, and not waste food. Professor Mitchelle provided constructive criticism that assisted me in improving my writing skills in order to communicate information to my intended audience. This has also allowed me to experiment with different writing styles and have a safe space to improve both my writing and myself. I honestly struggled in the beginning in a new environment and learning style but since then with the safe space that was provided in ENG105 by Professor Mitchelle in class with weekly reflections and feedback to improve, ENG105 has since helped me in my writing in school.

In the third semester of year one, I took ENG210- Professional Writing Communication Literacy 2. The module helped me prepare for the future by providing opportunities to learn how to write cover letters and resumés, analyze scientific articles, write proposals, and persuasive speeches, Linked-in, as well as group analysis and proposal. ENG210 required me to write in a variety of settings.  It was, to put it mildly, stressful. In this course, I analyzed a potential career that I would like to pursue, presented it in a persuasive manner using little words in PowerPoint, wrote cover letters and resumés, analyzed a business problem and wrote a proposal to manage this business problem as a group. In the group, I was working alongside Year 1 peers as well as Year 3 peers with whom I had never met or interacted prior to this module.

The above artifact is my analysis of the genre of writing done by art curators. I was able to analyze what a curatorial statement and a curatorial research are, the purpose of curatorial statements, the target audience, and writing style in the format, tone, and voice through this. This had taught me the reasoning behind curators' curatorial statements and curatorial research. A presentation on this gave me practice in public speaking and taught me to be confident without looking at the slides or a script for words to convey to my audience.

(Research Proposal done as a group to come up with a solution for Dove. The link will direct you to the entire work.   https://drive.google.com/file/d/13Nu2nmg7CTRN8aTiyCEz-zVH3kFmGAT1/view?usp=share_link )

The artifact shown above is a team-created solution proposal for Dove. It focuses on racist and body-shaming advertisements distributed to the public by Dove. Putting on the guise of a public relations firm, devising solutions for Dove to combat the backlash from their advertisement. The group analyzed the problem, proposed solutions, and developed responses, comparing them to other companies to help Dove improve in the future. Such as apology responses, the use of monitoring tools, the formation of a diverse multicultural team, and creative testing.

Great care was taken in the writings in the above artifacts to ensure that they are concise and easy to read. Aside from that, my peers and I had reviewed and provided feedback on each other's work, including strengths and weaknesses, in order to help each other improve as we learned from each other's mistakes. There have been times when teammates were unresponsive or overly busy, and it has taught me to be patient, to assist the team in reminding everyone of due dates, and to understand how important each person is to the team when it comes to group work, as well as how communication is essential.

Taking this module with Professor Lechimi, who was knowledgeable and strict but gave a lot of constructive feedback to help improve and prepare for the future outside of school, was truly an educational and productive experience.
